Noise Can Be an Effective Self Defense Deterrent
Sometimes, when you don’t have a weapon for self-defense, you can deter the attacker through other means. One of the most effective ways to deter an attacker or home invader is using noise, because the last thing one of these people wants is attention drawn to them.
In the event of a home invasion, there are a number of ways to get the invader out quickly.
First, you should keep your car keys by your bed, so that if you hear that bump in the night, you can turn on the car alarm, which will usually get them to take off.
Also, you can get a dog, who will bark and howl to alert everyone that there’s someone breaking in, even if they were quiet getting in. Interviews with previous burglars have shown that they hate nothing more than a loud dog.
You can also prevent home invasions while you’re away by leaving your radio or TV on high volume. This will make most potential invaders think that you’re not only home, but also awake and active.
You can also use noise outside of your home. You can buy cheap survival whistles on Amazon for less than $10. Fox 40 sells a whistle that emits 120 dB, roughly as loud as a nearby thunder-clap.
Another good company for whistles is Storm, who claims to have the loudest whistles in the world, which can be heard from 50 feet underwater and are used by many police departments, emergency services, and disaster rescue teams. Storm whistles are available on Amazon for $7, and emit a 130 dB sound, which is equivalent to being 200 feet away from a jet at takeoff, and is also considered to be the threshold of pain from loud noises.
Everyone within a large radius will hear this, and if you blow multiple times, will want to know what’s going on. The last thing a criminal wants is the whole city block being attracted to them.
Similarly, you can purchase air horns, which may sound foolish, but it’s very effective. They can be pointed in the face of an attacker to cause pain and ear damage, while also alerting people in a ½ mile to 1 mile radius. When purchasing one, make sure that it’s meant for boating, sports, or camping. Air horns meant for parties or other small events won’t make much noise.
Even if you don’t buy anything, you can always scream. Screaming in any semi populated area will attract people’s attention even more – even maybe that of the police. Loud noise self-defense is an easy alternative for those who can’t access a weapon to fight an attacker off.
