Preparing With Water and Food Storage
Food storage can save you and your family in a crisis, but many of us never actually get around to stocking up the food reserves that will carry us through difficult times. And those who actually do have some type of food storage often make some mistakes that can make the whole effort pointless. The good news is that most of these mistakes are easy to avoid.
One of the mistakes that many people make is employing containers that simply are not up to the task of keeping everything safe. These containers, whether they are 5 gallon buckets or Mylar bags need to be food grade containers that can stand up to time and usage.
Some people also make the mistake of keeping their food storage in a bad place. The location for your food reserves needs to be cool and dry and well out of direct sunlight. The storage area should also maintain a constant temperature and offer convenient access to the food. That way you are more likely to rotate the food properly.
Food rotation is another important step, but so many people often forget it. Make sure that you use the food you have in storage and then immediately replace it. This way you can catch any problems like deterioration or spoilage in the food or the containers.
Another problem is the lack of variety. Sometimes our food storage doesn’t consist of anything but canned goods. It will be a much more useful resource if it includes a variety of foods from the quick and easy foodstuffs to home and canned foods.
One of the biggest mistakes that people make is related to the water storage or filtration systems. Water is extremely important, especially in crisis situations, and you should always have at least two weeks worth of water on hand for drinking and for preparing foods.
Finally, people often forget to keep preparation and cooking equipment on hand. This is, of course, necessary to make sure you can actually put your food storage to good use. This also means you should keep fuel on hand to power generators or food cookers.
Keeping food and water storage in your house is just a good idea. However, it is important that you avoid these common mistakes to ensure that when the time comes, you will have edible, nourishing food when you really need it.
One of the most basic aspects of being prepared is to have water storage. There are other things, such as food storage, that can also play a role in saving and sustaining the lives of you and your family in the event of a natural disaster.
